- Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, shaving, and washing up.
- Don't use the toilet as a wastebasket or flush it unnecessarily.
- Repair leaky toilets and faucets.
- Retrofit your toilet to reduce the of amount water 'flushed' away.
- Install low-flow showerheads.

- Run your dishwasher only when it is full.
- Keep drinking water in the refrigerator rather than letting your tap run to get cold water.
- If you wash dishes by hand, fill the sink half full or less with water for washing. Rinse in the same sink to avoid water going down the drain.
- Repair leaky faucets.
- If a dishwasher needs replacing install an energy efficient model.
- Only run the washing machine if there is a full load.
- Use the level setting on the washing machine.
- Get a high-efficiency washing machine to cut water and energy usage by up to 50 per cent.
- Aerate to improve water penetration.
- Check your irrigation system to ensure there are no leaks, and install rainwater shutoffs.
- Do not over-water, as this damages roots and increases risk of weed infestation.
- To reduce loses due to evaporation, water early in the morning (after the dew has dried).
- Mulch plants with straw, leaves or manure to conserve moisture.
- Consider installing a water efficient drip system.
- Increase water retention of your soil by adding compost.
